Thelma Irene (Hamel) Praiano, 98, died peacefully on Sunday, January 26, 2020 at Baker Katz Nursing Home with family by her side. She was the beloved wife of the late Michael R. Praiano with whom she shared many loving years of marriage until his passing in 1982.
Born in Haverhill on August 24, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Napoleon and Clarabelle (Hanks) Hamel. Thelma was a graduate of Haverhill High School, and spent many years working for Rex Potato Chips, and later at Tek Coating until her retirement.
Thelma was an avid bowler and participated in a bowling league at Academy Lanes into her nineties. She enjoyed watching Jeopardy! nightly, and watching Boston Sports, particularly the Red Sox. Thelma will always be remembered for her sharp wit, keen sense of humor, and the ability to come up with a song to sing for every occasion. Above all, her most cherished time was spent surrounded by family.
Thelma is survived and will be deeply missed by her daughter-in-law, Barbara Praiano; granddaughters, Mara Praiano, Dr. Jessica Clement and her husband Dr. Jordan Greenbaum, and Laura Brindle and her husband Brian; her granddaughter-in-law and primary caregiver, Mary Jane Praiano; great-grandchildren, Michael J. Praiano, Hannah Praiano West and her husband Michael, Jakob and Olivia Brindle, and Quinlan and Aria Greenbaum; and three great-great grandchildren, Colin, Mason and Fiona West; as well as many nieces, nephews, friends, and all those who affectionately referred to her as “Gram.”
In addition to her husband, Michael, she was predeceased by her son, Barry R. Praiano, Sr.; her grandson, Barry R. Praiano, Jr., her sisters, Eva Trahan, Emeline Berg, Louise Kouroyen and Jeannette Carlson; and her brothers, Edgar, Leroy, Charles and John Hamel. The Praiano family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Baker Katz Nursing Home for the love and kindness they showed Thelma over the past year, as well as Brookhaven Hospice and her aide, Sherry Feronetti.
